Repertoire Note

Unlike many of his older contemporaries such as Zemlinsky, Schreker and Korngold, Goldschmidt rarely ventured into the genre of the Lied, but these two settings of short poems by Christian Morgenstern are, in their quiet way, among his finest achievements. The first, Nebelweben (Fogweaving), is a tranquil evocation of drifting fog conjuring up ghostly apparitions, while the second, Ein Rosenzweig (A Sprig of Roses), describes a brief amorous encounter that happened "somewhere in the South".
